Compila Exchange

Webdesigner help, webdesign software, html css tutorials

Hello all,
I've used Compila's hosting packages to create secure directories within websites for clients in the past, and in fact I've included a Word Press blog as a Comments area for members only (for an association discussing committee documents) within one of those directories.

I now have to go one step further.  One of my clients wants to have a website only for members which I'll set up for them, so that's fine - secure directories as before - but they want to be able to upload documents (grouped by subject matter) on a regular basis for download or printing by all the other users and content manage it all themselves AND have all users with admin access so any of the 36 or so users can upload.  Whew.

Is Word Press the best bet for this, or should I be looking at purchasing a license on a commercial CMS for them.  I've never worked with CMS and only used Word Press twice, so I'm a wee bit new to all that! Oh, and they are on a tight budget!

Any advice gratefully received!

Dear Mr Howden,

To be honest I am not 100% sure if WordPress can handle this requirement specifically for you, but WordPress is as good as many Commercial CMS, so technically I would imagine it could.

I would recommend having a look at http://wordpress.org/extend/ and the plugin section. Do a search in there to see if anyone has created a plugin, that will provide you with the features that you require.

Harvey
Hello Harvey,
Thanks for that. I've had a quick look and to be honest, I'm not even sure what I'm looking for. I had a look at the dashboard of one WordPress that I already use for a client and I couldn't see where you would even upload a Word document or an image using the default version of WordPress - can you direct me on that?

Regards,
Margaret Howden (I forgive you for the Mr!! )
Hi Margaret,

Sorry about that. In the standard dashboard there is not an upload facility, you can add an image to a post. I would recommend having a look in the plugin section of WordPress - http://wordpress.org/extend/ to see if someone has written some software that will do what you require.

I didi a search for file transfer and also member section and there are a number of plugins available but I am not sure if they will do everything you require.

Regards

Harvey
