Found an interesting site that lets me post to all my social media sites, including facebook, myspace twitter etc.
http://www.ping.fm

takes a bit of time to set up but once done, one post from the dashboard goes to all the sites you are subscribed to. This saves me a lot of time when I need to broadcast, you can even connect from your mobile phone for those urgent messages

Hi Paul,

Thank you for reminding me about Ping. I have known about it for a while now but never used it, I guess as you say because of the set up time, but I will definitely take another look.

I think my concern regarding this would be that Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc., are all very different beasts in terms of the way communication is relayed - for example, Twitter is designed for short, sharp bursts whereas Facebook allows for slightly more detailed posts, and MySpace is a whole different beast again, probably the closest thing in social media to an actual blog and therefore potentially more detailed.

Whilst there are times that it would be useful to be able to post one "newsflash" message across all the social media networks, because of the differences between them it's not something I would want to automatically happen every time. Does Ping allow you to select which networks you post an update to, e.g. does it have some kind of checkbox interface whereby you can write a post and then tick where you'd like it to be published to? If so, then I could see it being a very useful tool! :)

Best wishes,

Chris
Hi Chris

Yes with Ping you can select the networks you want to publish to.

You make some very valid points here, and it is essential to appeal to the different audiences of the different Social Networks. When I was first looking into Social Media a contact of mine on LinkedIn gave me his strategy, which I think is very good.

This is his strategy;

LinkedIn - Business and professional topics/use. No personal stuff, no politics, nothing that could potentially offend or appear unprofessional.

Facebook - Strictly personal. I connect with friends (no business contacts unless they are also friends). I tend to post anything I find interesting; religion, politics; funny pics; inspirational quotes, etc.

Twitter - Right now, this is a smorgasboard of the above two. I have a mix of friends and professional contacts, but use it primarily to share compelling content quickly (on the go).

No matter what platform you use, you have to keep in mind your audience and what is interesting/compelling for them. Also, know that what you post on these various sites will eventually get around, so be conscientious of what you post.

Regards

Harvey
