Hi everyone,

With the UK Christmas no.1 single having basically been orchestrated by a Facebook group campaign, has social media on the Internet now officially become the most powerful form of marketing on the planet?

Whilst social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have obviously been growing in influence for some time, for the Christmas no.1 to be a 17-year-old heavy metal track chosen and championed by a Facebook group, surely this is the most powerful result achieved by social networking to date?

Do you guys think this is a good thing or a bad thing, and can you see this having an effect on the way people and organisations promote or campaign in the future?

Best wishes,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I think without doubt Social Media came of age in 2009 and its importance will continue to grow in 2010. Any business ignoring it's power will eventually loose out in the long run.

With regard to the Christmas No 1 campaign, I can't say I totally agree with it, as it has affected a talented 18 year old, but I guess this just shows the ultimate power Facebook and others now have. Facebook, reached 350 million users this year, which is a huge number, but is still a tiny fraction of the overall world's population.

Here is an interesting article on the predictions for Social Media in 2010.

Take care and Merry Christmas
