New website for singer-songwriter Jules Winchester, www.juleswinchester.com

Hello everyone,

First of all, I must apologise for my lack of activity here at Compila Exchange this past year - I've been extremely busy on a number of projects, but have regretted very much that I've not been able to spend more time here and contribute to this great online community.

One of the things that has taken up a lot of my time is that I've begun trying to swell the funds of the not-for-profit music club that I run by taking on a couple of web design projects in exchange for a donation to the club - although I've only done a couple of sites so far, this has proven to be very successful and I'm hoping to expand this aspect of things in 2011.

The Website Reviews section has always been one of my favourite areas of Compila Exchange, and so to try and get it moving a little again I've decided to be brave and share my latest effort with you all!  The site that I've just completed is for a singer-songwriter called Jules Winchester, a very talented young lady who I think has a very bright future in front of her!

Here's the website: http://www.juleswinchester.com

Please bear in mind when checking out this site that practically everything you see was influenced by what she told me she wanted - one of the biggest areas where this can be seen is with the Music & Video page, which is powered heavily by Flash.  The website she linked me to as an example of how she wanted this page to function was set up this exact way.  Obviously Flash is very flawed due to its lack of portability across mobile devices, etc., and also because in my experience it has a tendency to be slightly "buggy" - however, I managed to find a nice open source Flash music player that seems to work well, and she was very pleased with it.  However, please know that I am aware of the potential pitfalls that come from employing Flash - I hunted high and low for a Javascript-powered alternative that worked in the same way, if anyone can point me in the direction of something for any future projects like this, please let me know as I'd be very grateful!

Many thanks for taking the time to look, and in closing can I extend my warmest wishes of the Christmas season to everyone here at Compila Exchange!  :)

Best wishes,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have just looked at your site and my first impressions are great. The site works well and the information is easy to read and find. I have only a few minor points really that I would suggest, just to help the site a little
further.

1. You have a large image on the home page that says enter. I would suggest cutting this image up into slightly smaller images so that slower connections and mobile devices do not have to wait a while until they see that something is happening.
Smaller images will load quicker.

2. The logos for Amazon and YouTube etc. I would make them highlight when you roll over them as they are not immediately obvious at first that they are links when you hover over them.

3. I would also try and add a colour in to help highlight certain words or titles within the page. This will help split the page up and highlight the different sections within the page etc.

Other than that, I think you have created a well designed site and have also managed to keep the brand throughout.

Well done!

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony,

Thanks so much for taking the time to look over the site, and I very much appreciate all of your helpful comments!  :)

Re: the front page image, is there a way that this one big image can be divided up into pieces, "jigsaw-style", to then display as one seamless image when all pieces are fully loaded?  If so, please would it be possible for you to link me to an example of this so I can see how it's done?  I definitely agree with you about load times being a consideration.

Re: the rollover effect on the social media buttons, I agree and will try and implement this.  Excellent suggestion!

Re: the additional colour to highlight certain words, headers, etc., is there a colour that you would suggest?  :)  Jules specifically stated she wanted a black background with white text so I went with that, but again if there's an example you could link me to or specific suggestion you'd be able to give me I'd be very happy to chat with her about it - I'm extremely grateful to you for taking the time to look and very much appreciate your expert knowledge of these matters!  :)

Once again, Tony, many thanks for all your kind words about the website and for taking the time to have a look - I'm very proud to be entrusted with doing the website for such a talented artist, so I'm very grateful to you for your helpful comments.

Best wishes,

Chris

Hi Chris,

No problem about the comments. This is what this Exchange site has been setup for!

Ok with regard to the front image, there are two options that you can use to achieve this. Firstly you can create 4 different divs and use background images to create a grid style of 2 up and 2 down. This would then provide you with the result you require.

The other option (albeit a little less used, but very easy and effective, is to use a table with 2 x 2 cells and place the images in there are background images.

With regard to the highlight colour I would use something that is very subtle rather than an in your face colour. It will just help break things up and make the text easier to use and it will show definate sections withi a page. I would use the colour #ffffcc or something similar to that.

I hope these help.

Cheers

Tony
